The Graduate Program in Development and Environment (Programa de Pós-Graduação em Desenvolvimento e Meio Ambiente - PRODEMA) was created to meet the demands and aspirations of society in the search for a solution to social, environmental and economical problems towards sustainable development. Under this aspect, the challenges faced by society require professional competence, as an indispensable quality, coupled with the institutional commitment of the Federal University of Ceará (Universidade Federal do Ceará - UFC) in the search for local solutions for the Northeastern society.

Since 1996, the Master's Course (Mestrado em Desenvolvimento e Meio Ambiente - MDMA) has adopted the concept of sustainable development as a paradigm and the Brazilian Northeast as the focus region of its lines of research, in an interdisciplinary approach. As of 2010, updating the Brazilian Post-Graduation, the Doctoral Course (Doutorado em em Desenvolvimento e Meio Ambiente - DDMA) was created with the inclusion of the Broad Association in Network of Higher Education Institutions (HEI) of the Northeast formed by a network of 07 (seven) Universities:

The Network Association consists of a sustainable alternative to produce creative ethical and collective science with a view to teaching, researching and extension programs based on interdisciplinarity. It seeks harmony between the social, ecological and economic objectives of development in the locations where the HEIs are sited.
