Doctorate and Master Degrees

Development and Environment

The acquirement of knowledge on an interdisciplinary basis, aimed at sustainable development, is a challenge for the sciences in the context of Northeast Brazil. The development model, which still is predominant in the region, is characterized by the degradation of natural resources, cultural and social conditions. Therefore, it is necessary to formulate and establish development strategies based on innovative technological alternatives and management of natural and cultural heritage.

In this way, the doctoral proposal is to be based on the interdisciplinary matrix ofcriticaland systemic approaches, so it will contribute to the construction of an attentive development of the regional needs and the repressed demands of qualification of human resources. Thus, establishing the Development and Environment as a Doctoral concentration area means gathering efforts in research and training lines of professionals that will work in territorial spaces with scarce natural and human resources and growing social demands. For that reason, it is of fundamental relevance that the Doctorate prioritize interdisciplinary research on regional problems and endogenous potential, taking advantage of the existing critical mass. Due to the synergy between the objectives and the area of concentration, the Doctorate establishes as research and training lines: Planning and Management of Semi-Arid Zones and Border Ecosystems, and Territorial Planning and Conflict Management in Coastal Environments.

Based on the proposed projects and research subprojects, the Integrated Project for the Ecologically Sustainable Management of Water in Hydrographic Basins of the Brazilian Northeast is presented as fundamental for strengthening this association in a network of scientific knowledge production; which is aimed to catalyze the longing for economic, social, ecological, cultural and spatial sustainability essential to autonomy, emancipation and solidarity with the Northeastern people.
